Breaking the Ceiling: How Women are Revolutionising the Roofing Industry

Discover how Consolidated Roof Brands supports gender diversity, challenging construction industry stereotypes and creating opportunities for women in skilled trades.

The construction industry has long been male-dominated, with women often underrepresented in various trades. In South Africa, women constitute a small fraction of the construction workforce, often facing challenges such as gender discrimination and limited access to opportunities.

At Consolidated Roof Brands, we are committed to changing this narrative by creating inclusive training programs that empower women in roofing and carpentry.

Equal Opportunities in Action

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we highlight our partnership with the Ndlovu Vocational Training Centre (NVTC), established in January 2022 to support marginalised youth in South Africa by providing practical training in essential trades.

Through our collaboration, we offer workplace experience for carpentry students of all genders, aligning with NVTC’s mission to equip students with skills in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying, painting, and electrical work.

Our approach is straightforward—we welcome all qualified trainees to learn every aspect of roof truss manufacturing and installation. From crafting trusses to assembling Ultra-Span® systems, our female trainees participate fully in all technical processes and field installations.

Real Skills, Real Results

It’s remarkable to witness the impact of this inclusive approach across work sites throughout South Africa. Our female team members demonstrate exceptional skill and dedication in all aspects of roofing work.

By the end of each project, clients consistently recognize the expertise and professionalism shown by our diverse teams. Each successful installation helps shift perceptions about who can thrive in the construction industry.

“At Roof Brands, we take pride in the rigorous training and equal opportunities we provide to every team member. When clients express surprise at seeing women on our installation teams, we assure them with confidence—every team member is trained to uphold the Roof Brands standard. The presence of women on our installation teams does not compromise service quality; it reinforces our commitment to excellence. Initially met with skepticism, our female team members consistently exceed expectations, proving their skill, precision, and dedication with every project. Rising above that initial skepticism, every time.”

Beyond Technical Training

Our commitment extends beyond technical skills. We provide mentorship in areas including:

  • Working at heights safety certification
  • Basics of roof design training
  • General workplace skills
  • Professional development guidance

While we maintain equal expectations for work responsibilities, we ensure appropriate accommodation arrangements for all team members when traveling to remote work sites, prioritizing the safety and comfort of our female trainees.

Making a Difference

Last year, we were thrilled to see seven young women graduate from our training partnership program with NVTC out of a total class of 21 students. Among these graduates were three young mothers, demonstrating that parenthood and career advancement in construction can go hand-in-hand.

We’ve already employed two graduates on contract and hope to bring on more as our operations continue to expand. Each successful female graduate becomes a powerful example within their community, helping to reshape perceptions of what women can achieve in skilled trades.

Join the Revolution

At Consolidated Roof Brands, we’re revolutionising the roofing industry not just through superior truss systems, but by contributing to the development of a diverse, skilled workforce. Our partnership with NVTC combines education, practical training, and equal opportunity—creating pathways for women to establish rewarding careers in construction.

For those interested in the vocational training program, direct inquiries can be made to Ndlovu Vocational Training Centre, or contact us at Roof Brands for guidance on the application process.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the progress being made in our industry and recommit ourselves to supporting inclusive practices across the construction sector in Africa. We’re not just building better roofs—we’re contributing to a better industry.
